A last second turn of his head saved Donald Trump’s life, but it ended that of an audience member near him and simultaneously puts the former president in the box seat to win re-election, rather than a box in the ground.
Trump probably didn’t expect he’d be shot to power in quite this fashion, but in contrast to President Biden’s cognitive problems there were no flies on Trump as he rapidly capitalised on the assassination attempt, raising a defiant fist salute to the crowd as he was escorted to safety by the Secret Service amid crowd chants, “USA! USA!”
Three shots appear to have been fired from a vantage point outside the secure venue, one grazing Trump’s ear but ploughing into a spectator, the second also hitting a spectator. One of the bystanders is dead, the other wounded. The distance of several hundred metres away accounts for Trump’s head turn saving his life during the bullet’s flight.
Within seconds, the Secret Service had identified the shooter and returned a barrage of shots, killing the gunman.
Democrat supporters were quick to cry “Staged!” on social media but, tempting as it may be for some, that conspiracy theory doesn’t stack up given the head injury to Trump which could easily have been fatal for him and was for a man behind him.
More likely is that a deranged Democrat supporter, worried that Trump could win if Biden doesn’t make way for a stronger Democrat candidate, has tried to move the dial by taking out Trump completely.
He’s achieved the opposite. Joe Biden has been circumstantially forced to “pray for…Donald” and endorse Trump’s right to campaign. A very much alive Trump, face streaked with blood, has become martyr de jour, living proof that “the swamp” is out to get him.
Bookmakers now believe Trump is clear favourite to win the November election contest, and barring a miracle a Trump win now seems inevitable.
