Concerns raised over ‘terrible precedent’ set by Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill – RNZ 3 July 2024

The Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill, mandating tech companies to pay news organisations, faces criticism. Media lecturer Peter Thompson warns it may not fund essential journalism and could lead to tech giants blocking news content. Communications Minister Paul Goldsmith said they sought alignment with Australia’s model, while Labour’s Willie Jackson perceived the bill’s necessity for struggling local media.

Concerns about ministerial involvement and effectiveness persist.
