Hypothetical ‘Disease X’ drives online debate ahead of World Economic Forum meeting

Summarised by Centrist

The World Economic Forum is set to host a meeting called “Preparing for Disease X,” addressing potential preparations for a hypothetical, highly lethal disease known as “Disease X.” Disease X, though not an actual disease, was conceptualised to encourage the development of countermeasures such as vaccines and tests for future outbreaks.

This event has sparked controversy on social media, with right-wing groups criticising the plans as reminiscent of COVID lockdown measures. Some, like former Fox News contributor Monica Crowley, argue that it could be exploited to impose restrictions on free speech and personal freedoms.

Amidst this, COVID hospitalizations and deaths have been increasing, with 1.165 million COVID-related deaths in the U.S. as of December 30, 2023 according to the CDC.

Editor’s note: The relationship between COVID, Long COVID and COVID vaccines is still unclear in our view.
