An oldie, but a goodie from 2021: Is the surge in transgender identification among teen girls due to social media?

Summarised by Centrist

A 2021 Prager U video by Abigail Shrier, author of Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters, still rings true today.

Shrier discusses Gender Dysphoria, the condition of severe discomfort in one’s biological sex, which has historically affected boys from a very young age. Yet, a sudden explosion in teenage girls seeking gender transition has been noted since 2016.

Citing Brown University researcher Lisa Littman, Shrier attributes this trend to peer and social media influencers promoting transitioning as a solution to adolescent discomfort. Shrier calls them “today’s version of Hollywood stars.”

This generation of young girls experience psychological pain, with anxiety, depression, and self-harm at record levels.  A “quick fix” of testosterone treatments becomes very tempting, according to Shrier.

However, many teens now share testimonials online, expressing their regret and warning others.

“Unnecessary medical gender transition causes irreversible damage,” said Shrier, and leads to a high risk of infertility, sexual dysfunction and the creation of a permanent medical patient.

Furthermore, treatments are too easily obtained, she says.

To protect daughters from this trend, limit their social media exposure, oppose gender ideology teachings in schools, and provide stable guidance as they traverse their teenage years.
