Letham-McGrath: Why are ideas from Queer Theory so vociferously and violently defended?

Summarised by Centrist

“In Dear Straight People ” Paul Letham-McGrath shares his perspective as a counsellor and a gay man regarding his concerns about the impact of Queer Theory on the LGBTQ+ community in New Zealand.

He criticises the ideological rigidity and divisive nature of most LGBTQ+ activism in recent years and worries that the movement’s current trajectory undermines the progress made since the 1970s.

Letham-McGrath disapproves of the “affirmation-only approach” in treating gender dysphoria and calls out taxpayer funded advocacy groups like Rainbow Youth and InsideOut for pushing an ideology that is harming many people.

He laments the polarisation and “bloody minded tribalistic events” seen at Albert Park during the Let Woman Speak event by LGBTQ+ activists and presses the need for respectful and open dialogue.
