NZ and the Middle East powder keg: Geoffrey Miller says we have a role to play

Summarised by Centrist

Geopolitical analyst Geoffrey Miller writes that “New Zealand may be wary of getting its fingers burned by seeking to become more involved in the Middle East’s problems.”

But, according to Miller, one of the issues of staying on the sidelines is that it has distracted global attention from New Zealand’s concerns in the Indo-Pacific.

According to Miller: “No-one is suggesting that New Zealand can single-handedly bring peace to the Middle East. But by working in concert with others, both inside and outside the region, it can certainly play its part.”

Miller  notes that as tensions in the Middle East escalate, Foreign Minister Winston Peters has consistently addressed the deteriorating situation and its impacts on global security. In May, he called for an immediate cessation of armed conflict in Gaza, reflecting concerns over potential miscalculations by Israel and Iran.

New Zealand’s response also includes diplomatic efforts. Peters met with key regional players, such as Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during trips to Cairo and Istanbul. These visits aimed to gather insights and support ceasefire efforts.

Moreover, Trade Minister Todd McClay’s visits to the Gulf states have provided valuable regional perspectives, which he shares with Cabinet colleagues. New Zealand’s strategic focus remains on the Indo-Pacific, but its involvement in Middle Eastern issues underscores its commitment to global peace.
