NZ media cherry picks IMF GDP data to mislead voters

Summarised by Centrist

In “NZ Media spins the IMF GDP figures in Labour’s favor” Rob MacCulloch takes Newshub to task for cherry picking data from IMF’s latest GDP growth figures to make NZ’s terrible global standings look less terrible on the day before voting.

There’s no justification to how Newshub chose their group of “different economies”, which pulls from the 189 countries listed in the IMF ranking to make the comparison in their article.

McCulloch says:

“Newshub took a tiny subset of 25 countries (representing only 13% of the 189 countries the IMF collected data on) but included on that list nearly all the countries that did worse than NZ (6 out of 9) and yet threw out nearly all the countries placed ahead of us (keeping just 18 out of the 180).”

By doing so, Newshub is able to cast NZ’s GDP into the “Not amazing, but not too bad” category. In reality, the data without Newshub’s spin shows NZ is 180th out of 189 countries for expected GDP growth in 2023-2024.
