Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has suspended his long-shot bid for the US presidency and thrown his support behind Donald Trump. Kennedy accused the Democratic party of conspiring to keep him out of the race. “I am not terminating my campaign. I am simply suspending it,” Kennedy stated during an appearance in Phoenix, Arizona.

Kennedy’s endorsement of Trump comes despite having been a “ferocious critic” of the former president’s policies. However, the alliance is rooted in shared positions on some key issues. These  include ending the war in Ukraine and securing the US southern border.

The Kennedy family has publicly condemned his decision. Five of RFK Jr’s siblings called it “a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear.”

Despite his exit from the race, Kennedy’s endorsement could provide a boost to Trump’s campaign as the election approaches. Kennedy’s departure leaves Trump and Harris to battle it out in the final stretch to November 5.
