Royal College of Psychiatrists in Australia and New Zealand issues guidelines for gender-related patient care

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) has recently released updated guidelines on providing care to Trans and Gender Diverse (TGD) individuals in Australia and New Zealand. In them, RANZCP affirms traditional definitions of male and female and acknowledges the experiences of detransitioners, which contrasts with the prevailing activist climate.

RANZCP still opposes “conversion therapy”, but urges practitioners to point out the mental health challenges faced by TGD individuals. 

The document also encourages psychiatrists not to view gender experimentation as a clinical issue requiring intervention and to prioritise a patient’s perspective in care decisions. 

Dr George Halas, in an interview with Sky TV, called this shift “remarkable” given the strength of pro-transgender activism.
