The purpose of gotcha journalism is to make the target look bad, stupid or both, says du Fresne.

Labour has been under pressure as well, but as the party in power – its actions and policies affect everyone – you’d expect the media scrutiny to be most intense here.

But the “gotcha” game seems to be targeted at centre-right politicians.
