US Supreme Court to hear cases challenging state laws prohibiting social media censorship

Summarised by Centrist

In “U.S. Supreme Court to Weigh in on State Laws to Prevent Tech Giants From Censoring Social Media Content” Dr Michael Nevradakis reports the Supreme Court will hear challenges to Texas and Florida social media anti-censorship laws.

The New York Times is reporting that this will lead to “a major ruling on how the First Amendment applies to powerful tech platforms.”

“If upheld, the laws could open the door to more state legislation with similar obligations for social media sites,” writes Nevradakis.

CNN is reporting the laws could make it harder for platforms to remove so-called “misinformation, hate speech or other offensive material.”
