Why can’t NZ journalists do their jobs?

Summarised by Centrist

Michael Bassett, in his article Why can’t our journalists do their jobs? says media coverage of the election is terrible. He says the 3 News’ debate between the minor party leaders is an example of blatant bias and unfairness.

Bassett says it doesn’t need to be like this as there are many important questions for the election that journalists could be digging into — but aren’t.

For instance, why have education achievement levels been steadily declining for more than a decade? Why is the Government persisting with racially segregated healthcare, despite its failure? Why are standards of public healthcare so variable?

Bassett says the media isn’t recruiting people of the same journalistic standard as in the past. Many current journalists believe they are “entitled to inflict their personal political prejudices on the rest of us by slanting their stories”. ”
