Williams: Voting Green would be a disaster for farmers and the country

summarised by Centrist

In “Farmers – don’t read the Herald”, journalist Peter Williams says writer Simon Wilson is advocating ‘economic sabotage’ in suggesting that NZ’s farmers should vote for the Green Party in the general election.

The principle reason for Williams’ opposition is the policy of the Greens to bring methane emissions into the Emissions Trading Scheme and start charging farmers for animal emissions from 2025.

Williams rejects the premise that without more green taxation NZ may be shut out of the world market rewarding green policies.

He also cites faulty data informing green policies that vastly overstated GHG’s impact on global temperature and notes NZ contributes a minute amount of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs).

Ultimately, Williams advocates abolishing the Climate Change Commission altogether and for farmers (already the most efficient in the world when it comes to producing dairy) to get on producing protein for the world.
